Indigo is a color named after the blue dye derived from the plant Indigoferatinctoria and related species. The color is placed on the electromagneticspectrum between about 420 and 450 nm in wavelength, placing it between blueand violet. Although traditionally considered one of seven divisions of the rainbowor the optical spectrum, modern color scientists do not usually recognizeindigo as a separate division and generally classify wavelengths shorter thanabout 450 nm as violet. Optical scientists Hardy and Perrin list indigo asbetween 446 and 464 nm wavelength.
India is believed to be the oldest center of indigo dyeing in the Old World.It was a primary supplier of indigo dye, derived from the plant Indigoferatinctoria, to Europe as early as the Greco-Roman era. The association ofIndia with indigo is reflected in the Greek word for the 'dye,' which was indikon(ινδικόν). The Romans used the term indicum, which passed into Italiandialect and eventually into English as the word indigo. The country of ElSalvador has been the biggest producer of indigo.
The same indigo dye is contained in the woad plant, Isatis tinctoria,for a long time the main source of blue dye in Europe. Woad was replaced bytrue indigo as trade routes opened up, and both are now largely replaced bysynthetic dyes.
Though the word indigo has existed in English since the 13th century, it maynever have been a common part of the basic color-naming system. The mental mapsof English speakers appear to contain just six basic spectral colors: red,orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
The color electric indigo is used tosymbolically represent the sixth chakra (called Ajna), which is said toinclude the third eye. This chakra is believed to be related to intuitionand gnosis (spiritual knowledge).

Using Indigo Therapy Indigo is a sedative and it helps to open up our intuition. The colour ofdivine knowledge and the higher mind. Not suitable for areas for entertainmentbut for more 'quiet' places. Bedrooms or treatment rooms for example. Somepeople find indigo is helpful for studying so this colour could be used as partof the decor of a library or study
In your feng shui color applications, color purple and indigo should be usedwith moderation. It is a very strong, high vibration color, the color ofconnection to the spiritual realms (6 and 7th chakra.)
