Indigo is a color named after the blue dye derived from the plant Indigoferatinctoria and related species. The color is placed on the electromagneticspectrum between about 420 and 450 nm in wavelength, placing it between blueand violet. Although traditionally considered one of seven divisions of the rainbowor the optical spectrum, modern color scientists do not usually recognizeindigo as a separate division and generally classify wavelengths shorter thanabout 450 nm as violet. Optical scientists Hardy and Perrin list indigo asbetween 446 and 464 nm wavelength.


India is believed to be the oldest center of indigo dyeing in the Old World.It was a primary supplier of indigo dye, derived from the plant Indigoferatinctoria, to Europe as early as the Greco-Roman era. The association ofIndia with indigo is reflected in the Greek word for the 'dye,' which was indikon(ινδικόν). The Romans used the term indicum, which passed into Italiandialect and eventually into English as the word indigo. The country of ElSalvador has been the biggest producer of indigo.

The same indigo dye is contained in the woad plant, Isatis tinctoria,for a long time the main source of blue dye in Europe. Woad was replaced bytrue indigo as trade routes opened up, and both are now largely replaced bysynthetic dyes.

Though the word indigo has existed in English since the 13th century, it maynever have been a common part of the basic color-naming system. The mental mapsof English speakers appear to contain just six basic spectral colors: red,orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.




The color electric indigo is used tosymbolically represent the sixth chakra (called Ajna), which is said toinclude the third eye. This chakra is believed to be related to intuitionand gnosis (spiritual knowledge).

In New Age philosophy, indigo isregarded as representing intuition.

In the aurawith their third eye generally associate indigo, in auras, with an interest in religionor with intense spirituality and intuition. Indigo children are said to havepredominately indigo auras. People with indigo auras are said to be inoccupations such as computer analyst, animal caretaker, and counselor.

The color indigo is the color ofintuition and perception and is helpful in opening the third eye. It promotesdeep concentration during times of introspection and meditation, helping youachieve deeper levels of consciousness. It is a color which relates to the"New Age" - the ability to use the Higher Mind to see beyond thenormal senses with great powers of perception. It relies on intuition ratherthan gut feeling.

Indigo is a deep midnight blue. Itis a combination of deep blue and violet and holds the attributes of both thesecolors.

Service to humanity is one of thestrengths of the color indigo. Powerful and dignified, indigo conveys integrityand deep sincerity.

The color meaning of indigo reflectsgreat devotion, wisdom and justice along with fairness and impartiality. It isa defender of people's rights to the end.

Structure creates identity andmeaning for indigo. In fact an indigo person cannot function without structure- it throws them right off balance. Organization is very important to them andthey can be quite inflexible when it comes to order in their lives.

Indigo loves rituals and traditions,religion and the institutional system, conforming to things that have worked inthe past while planning for the future.

Indigo stimulates right brain orcreative activity and helps with spatial skills. It is a dramatic colorrelating to the world of the theater, which, during times of stress becomes thedrama queen, making a mountain out of a molehill!

The negative color meaning of indigorelates to fanaticism and addiction. Its addiction encompasses everything froma need for recognized qualifications to a need for illegal drugs, from theworkaholic to the religious fanatic.

Indigo can be narrow-minded,intolerant and prejudiced.



Physiological Effect:  indigo hasshown to alleviate conditions such as sunburn due to its purifying andantiseptic effect. This color also suppresses hunger and balances the body'smetabolism. Indigo, a lighter purple, has been used by doctors in Texas as ananesthesia in minor operations because its narcotic "A soothing ornumbing agent." qualities

Psychological Effect: Purples and Indigo have been used in the careof mental of nervous disorders because they have shown to help balance the mindand transform obsessions and fears. Indigo is often associated with the rightside of the brain; stimulating intuition and imagination. Violet is associatedwith bringing peace and combating shock and fear. Violet has a cleansing effectwith emotional disturbances. Also, this color is related to sensitivity tobeauty, high ideals and stimulates creativity, spirituality and compassion.Psychic power and protection has also been associated with violet.

INDIGO relates to the BROW chakra or third eye which is in the centre of theforehead The related organs to this chakra are the eyes, lower head and sinusesand the endocrine gland is the pituitary gland.

Indigo relates to self responsibility, that is to say, being responsible forone's own life; responsibility to oneself to follow the soul's path and needsand trusting one's own intuition. Using Indigo Therapy Indigo is a sedative and it helps to open up our intuition. The colour ofdivine knowledge and the higher mind. Not suitable for areas for entertainmentbut for more 'quiet' places. Bedrooms or treatment rooms for example. Somepeople find indigo is helpful for studying so this colour could be used as partof the decor of a library or study

Feng Shui


In your feng shui color applications, color purple and indigo should be usedwith moderation. It is a very strong, high vibration color, the color ofconnection to the spiritual realms (6 and 7th chakra.)
